ENT Surgical Procedures

The surgeons of Northwest ENT Surgery Center have experience performing various ear, nose and throat procedures. Some of the most common procedures include:

Ear Tubes (Tympanostomy)

Ear tubes are placed into the eardrum using a microscope under brief anesthesia. Tubes naturally move out of the eardrum usually in 6 to 9 months. The incision heals and has no effect on the eardrum. Because normal ear function improves over time, 90% of children only require one set of ear tubes.

After Surgery

There is no recovery period or pain after the procedure. Normal activities may be resumed immediately.  Special water precautions are not necessary. Out of town patients are cleared to travel within the hour. Follow-up is recommended in 6 months with ENT consultant.

Tonsillectomy

A tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils. It remains a very common procedure in children as well as adults. In our practice, we do as many children as adults.

This procedure completely eliminates problems with the tonsils including recurrent and chronic sore throats, mouth breathing and snoring, mild sleep apnea, tonsil stones, and chronic bad breath.

Surgery takes approximately 30 minutes, with most patients ready to leave 2 ½ to 3 hours after arrival. Discomfort varies widely, but averages 5/10 on a pain scale for one week. Pain sometimes worsens toward the end of the first week before it resolves. Children usually experience less discomfort than adults.

Septoplasty

Repairing or straightening a deviated septum  is a common nasal surgery performed under general anesthesia.  A small incision is made inside the nose and the thin plate of cartilage and bone in the center of the nose is repaired. The procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete, and most patients are able to return home within 2.5 to 3 hours.

After Surgery

There is no visible swelling no nasal packing is used. Mild discomfort is expected for the first 2 to 3 days, which quickly resolves (Pain Score: 3/10). Nasal bleeding is common the first day. Swelling and crusting inside the nose will gradually improve over several weeks.

Normal activities may be resumed after 3 days. Avoid heavy lifting for one week. Out of town patients are cleared for travel the next day, and no follow up is necessary.
